DANCE & MOVEMENT CLASSES:

EXERCISING TO JAZZ (Firming over 50)

Constant movement to benefit both body and mind!! Classes will be in three stages: 1) warm-up with stretches; 2) Firming over 50 excercise; 3) Learn easy Jazz steps with fun music. A mini dance will end each class!! Contact HCAC for a supply list.

INTRO TO SOCIAL BALLROOM DANCING

An adult class for couples or singles to learn the basic moves in the Foxtrot, Swing, Rumba,and more.  The basic rhythms and techniques for leading and following will be covered, as well as some styling.  The course will promote flexibility, muscle tone, and cardiovascular health.  It is great for stress relief, a date night with someone special, or for socializing and making new friends!  The method of teaching will make learning simple. This class is taught at the Jitterbugs School of Social Dance in Chicopee, MA.

LEARN TO TAP DANCE

DAUNTING DETAILS

Take your sewing to the next level by learning professional construction techniques. For example, set in a perfect sleeve every time. Apply centered, lapped, fly front, and invisible zippers with perfect results. Learn two ways to make welt pockets and bound buttonholes, and more. HAND PAINTED SILK SCARVES

Learn the Serti technique to create a stunning scarf to wear home. The method involves drawing fine lines of gutta resist onto silk to outline your design. The lines stop the dyes from flowing into one another allowing separate colored areas to be created. This is just like drawing an outline then "coloring it in; the possibilities are endless!!  Beginner friendly. INTRODUCTION TO PATTERN MAKING

Do you have a head full of designs but can't find the styles you want in the pattern books? This class is for you. You'll learn the basics of patternmaking using half scale slopers and flat pattern techniques. We'll cover bodices, skirts, sleeves, collars, pants and more. These skills will not only empower you to create patterns for your original designs, but also allow you to re-style and improve upon commercial patterns.

KNITTING OR CROCHETING

Create a beautiful sweater, socks or mittens by enrolling in knitting or crocheting. Learn the basics, choose a pattern and yarn, learn to read and understand patterns, assemble your project, or work on a project you have set aside for a rainy day.
Materials: Beginning knitters bring #8 size needles and a skein of light colored worsted wool yarn. Beginning crochet students bring a Crochet H hook and a skein of light colored worsted wool yarn. Advanced students may bring your own projects and patterns.

LANDSCAPE QUILTS

QUILTING

Would you like to hug someone in fabric? Make a quilt! This unstructured quilting class, for beginners and experienced quilters alike, allows you to learn to quilt while you learn about tools and techniques that make quilting fast and fun! Start a project of your own choosing, or bring a project you are already working on, or if you are undecided, a beginner project is ready to welcome you to the satisfying art of quilt making. SERGER WORKSHOP

Are you afraid of your serger? Step One: Take it out of the box, it won't bite. In this workshop you'll learn to tame the beast and it will become one of your favorite machines. We'll go over threading, tension, and stitches. You'll make samples that utilize various techniques on a variety of fabrics. We all love the fact that it overcasts, but it can also do so much more. SEWING: BEGINNER BASICS

This class will introduce novices to the basics of sewing: using the sewing machine, following a pattern, layout, cutting, marking, construction techniques, pressing, tools and notions. Each week will consist of a lecture/demo with time to work on practice samples, a zippered bag, an apron, and pajama pants. BEGINNING OIL PAINTING A STILL LIFE

DECORATIVE GLASS PAINTING

In this class students will learn to paint beautiful artwork on glass using a Q-Tip, small dowell and two painting brushes. INTERMEDIATE WATERCOLOR

Come build on your painting skills. We will explore a variety of watercolor painting styles while emphasing the skills and techniques needed to produce unique effects. You will get assistance turning your own photographs or still life's into interesting composition, with clear focal points. Plan to paint on larger sheets of paper to increase your techniques. INTRO TO WATERCOLOR

An individual class designed for beginners and intermediate students although all experienced levels are welcomed. OIL, ACRYLIC, MIXED MEDIA AND THE DECORATIVE ARTS

Get professional guidance in design and composition. Handle lights and darks to create the illusion of three dimensional space. ONE STROKE PAINTING

Learn to paint one stroke with this Autumn Address Sign. This class is session one of a 3 part series.  Take one session or all three sessions.    If you’ve always wanted to learn how to paint like Donna Dewberry or tried to paint like her but struggled alone now is your chance to learn to paint her beautiful designs with a hands on experienced instructor.  Each class will include instruction in different stroke work.  It is not necessary to take every session to learn how to paint the One Stroke way.  However, every session will have something different to learn.

In Session One we will learn how to paint the beautiful Autumn Address Sign.  This wooden plaque can be hung on your front door, your porch wall or displayed in your front yard.

FURNITURE REFURBISHING:

CHAIR SEATING

That chair you found at a tag sale for only so few $'s,  that needs a new seat, can perhaps be transformed to a valuable antique. Learn the proper caning method (cane, rush, splint, or tape) appropriate for each chair. Chair should be of good structure, fixed or refinished if needed prior to first class.
Materials: Bring in chair 2 weeks prior to class so that Instructor can help you order your supplies.

PAINTED FURNITURE

In this class you will learn to make furniture from dull to alluring vintage pieces. Distressed furniture is the perfect way to add a creative touch to your home! Instruction includes how to properly prep your pieces, the best paint to use for base coating, a dry brush technique, splattering, and following with a lesson in the One Stroke technique of simple leaves & vines. A lesson in antiquing will be provided before finishing with a protecting sealer. These techniques allow students to give their pieces a vintage or old look.

UPHOLSTERY

Don't throw away that favorite worn-out, threadbare chair. Re-upholster it at a fraction of the cost of a new chair. Chairs must be sturdy and of good structure and not taken apart prior to first class. Learn to replace webbing and padding, tie springs, make buttons, welt cord, cover in muslin and then final material to produce a quality chair. Items to be upholstered also include dining room chairs, trunks, headboards, footstools, cornices, screens, etc.
Equipment: Bring your chair to the first class and speak with the instructor about the specific tools you will need for the type of chair you are working on. Measure your chair in the first class to determine your fabric needs before taking it apart.

WOOD CARVING

Learn the art of Wood Carving; chip/sign carving, relief carving, folk figures, or decoy/wildlife art. This is a great class for all levels of experience; from beginners with no experience to those who are looking for refresher course as each person works at their own pace. Students may work on their own projects, or chose one of Ed's award winning designs. When completed, each will have a finished work of art to proudly display. Several students, both past and present, have won awards for their carvings at various Wood Carving Shows.

Material Cost: $65 for a "starter" project and $20 for a basic carving knife (materials from sandpaper to finishing oil are included).
